Impact of snow storms on distribution grids: e-distribuzione and RSE experimental stations

Among the extreme weather events, the build-up of ice has the greatest impact on electricity distribution and transmission networks. In order to limit the impact of this phenomenon, e-distribuzione, in collaboration with RSE, has installed three experimental stations to characterize the ice build-up on the conductors and to calibrate the accretion model developed by RSE for the distribution network.

The progressive climate change caused by global warming is increasingly tangible, and leads to an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme events, such as heavy wet snow, heat waves and wind storms. These events have a strongly negative effect on the operation of distribution and transmission lines, affecting a large number of users. All published climate projections show a progressive increase in the number and intensity of these phenomena. In order to limit the impacts on the continuity of electricity supply, we need to study these phenomena in greater depth. In particular, the accumulation of ice on overhead conductors appears to be the phenomenon with the greatest impact on the network. For this reason, e-distribuzione, in collaboration with RSE, has installed three experimental stations to acquire all the measurements necessary to characterize the ice build-up phenomenon and to calibrate the accretion model developed by RSE for distribution networks.
