Improvement of the techniques for the computation of evapotranspiration maps

The definition of a methodology for estimating suitable areas for new installations of renewable energy plants requires identifying possible indices that describe the areas of interest. This study analyzes the Evapotranspiration (ET) index derived from satellite acquisitions over geographically diverse agricultural areas.

The definition of a methodology for estimating suitable areas for new installations of renewable energy plants requires identifying possible indicators that describe the areas under analysis. An interesting index for agricultural areas is Evapotranspiration (ET) estimated from satellite images. The Sen-ET project uses Copernicus data to calculate daily evapotranspiration.

The study presents an improvement in the methodology, ultimately comparing the ET estimates with those obtained from two hydrological models (BIGBANG and GlobWat). The different outputs are analyzed based on their spatial distribution, focusing on the most significant land cover classes for defining these suitable areas. The models are tested using a multi-temporal approach in two different regions of Italy with different climates and geographical conditions.
