Italy and Europe towards the energy transition. Comparison of the current situation and scenarios

This study presents a life cycle analysis of the electricity mix in Italy and seven European countries. The study compared the current mix (2018) and its evolution to 2030 according to the European Reference Scenario and PNIEC [the Italian Integrated Energy and Climate Plan] forecasts (the latter for Italy only).

Italy and the member states of the European Union are required to propose and implement an energy transition plan according to (EU) Directive 2018/2001 establishing a common framework for the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. This study analyzes and compares the current (2018) energy mix and scenarios to 2030, with a Life Cycle Thinking approach, of seven European countries (France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Belgium and Finland) and relates them to the Italian case. The results show a general reduction in the impacts of these eight countries for almost all impact categories. With the exception of Belgium, all countries achieve a reduction in their lifecycle energy mix impacts with regard to climate change, while there is an increase in impacts related to resource consumption, which is closely inversely correlated with the reduction in climate-changing gases.
