Load demand and grid integration of electric ferries: a case study in the three major Italian Lakes

This study addresses the energy consumption and charging needs for an electrified ferry fleet, focusing on Italy’s major lakes. Energy consumption during typical missions is analyzed. Load demand and two grid integration architectures are evaluated.

Ferries for short sea and inland shipping, represent one of the most promising segments for full electrification. From the grid point of view, electric ferries represent a large new load and, despite electric vehicles, few data and studies about their charging behaviour are available.

This paper aims to address this gap with a comprehensive assessment of the charging requirement of an electrified ferry fleet. A real case study is considered, i.e. the ferries in service in the three major Italian Lakes.

The energy consumptions of the ferries under typical profile missions are analysed. Two charging strategies are considered: “overnight charging” at the end of the service and “opportunity charging” during docking time. The load demand from the ferries’ recharge is derived.

Two architectures for the grid integration of the recharging infrastructure are considered: basic connection to the medium voltage (MV) grid and connection to the MV with the integration of shoreside storage system.
