Long-term development of the pan-European transmission system towards a prospective global power grid

This article contributes to studies related to the future development of the electricity transmission system in Europe through long-term analyses (2040). The study was conducted by extending a pan-European zonal model, both eastwards—integrating the networks of Ukraine and Moldova—and southwards—including the effects of flows to/from the areas of North African countries.

The focus was on long-term analyses (2040) that include transmission infrastructure in HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) and HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current), in particular. The study was conducted by extending a pan-European zonal model, both eastwards—integrating the networks of Ukraine and Moldova—and southwards—including the effects of flows to/from the areas of North African countries. The extension of the pan-European zonal model involves an increase in the level of trade at transcontinental borders, which is evaluated as an option to encourage further use of generation from renewable sources.
