Marine Vibrio spp. protect carbon steel against corrosion through secreting extracellular polymeric substances

Protecting marine materials from corrosion using marine bacterial biofilms is a promising strategy. In this study, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were extracted from the bacterial species Vibrio sp. EF187016 and tested in 3.5% NaCl solutions by weight. Corrosion tests conducted compared to abiotic environments suggested that EPS collected from biofilms can play a significant role in protecting carbon steel from corrosion.

Protecting marine materials from corrosion caused by marine bacterial biofilms is a promising strategy. However, little is still known about the mechanisms of this interesting corrosion prevention method. In this article, the corrosion behaviors of carbon steels (X80) were studied in the presence of three different marine species of Vibrio bacteria. The results showed that all three Vibrio spp. exhibited significant corrosion protection with a reduction in weight loss of up to 68%.

Furthermore, the performance was closely related to their ability to form biofilms, in the order: Vibrio sp. EF187016 > Vibrio alginolyticus > Vibrio parahaemolyticus. To further study the corrosion prevention mechanism caused by marine biofilms, various percentages of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were extracted from Vibrio sp. EF187016 and added to a 3.5% NaCl solution by weight. Test results compared to abiotic solutions and solutions without EPS suggested that biofilm EPS could play a significant role in protecting steel from corrosion.
