MVDC solid state breaker/limiter control with adaptive hysteresis limits

The article describes an adaptive control for solid-state current limiters for MVDC, capable of compensating for the problems deriving from non-compliance with the thresholds of hysteresis band controls, typical of these devices, resulting from the inevitable limitations of an implementation hardware. The control was implemented on a microcontroller and successfully verified in Control Hardware in The Loop (CHIL) simulations at the real time simulator.

Solid state current limiters must guarantee intervention speed and reliability. To obtain such performances, the current value is usually controlled by hysteresis regulators. This control is very robust but, due to inevitable hardware limitations, delays and inaccuracies can occur; the set thresholds can therefore be systematically exceeded. This work describes an adaptive control to compensate as far as possible for such defects in medium voltage direct current applications. The control was implemented and verified in Control Hardware in The Loop (CHIL) simulations at the real time simulator. Thanks to the simplicity of the algorithm, implementation on microcontrollers is easy and does not change the response speed. The result is better current control, especially for the upper threshold, limiting current peaks and keeping current ripple within the imposed limits.
