Reference system for the identification and acquisition of power system frequency transients

The paper describes the implementation of an algorithm for estimating the frequency and its derivative, whose measurement performance can be arbitrarily selected based on a few input parameters.

The dynamics of the electricity system are constantly monitored by network operators in order to evaluate compliance with stability margins and supply quality indicators. One of the crucial quantities is the frequency of the system, which reveals multiple bits of information regarding its state. The paper describes the implementation of an algorithm for estimating the frequency and its derivative, whose measurement performance can be arbitrarily selected based on a few input parameters. The instrument developed, in addition to monitoring these quantities, also records the waveforms of the voltage signal at the moments in which significant transients are detected (in terms of modulus/phase angle of the voltage). These data, which represent critical situations for many frequency estimation algorithms, can be further studied and generalized for the definition of a measurement testbed.
