Screening Advanced FACTS and State-of-the-Art Technologies to Improve Power Systems Stability with High RES Penetration

The purpose of this paper is to present the State-of-the-Art relating to some technological solutions capable of supporting the power system stability in scenarios with high penetration of renewable sources. In particular, the paper focuses on synchronous compensators, STATCOMs and supercapacitors. The performance and the technical features of these technologies are compared, in order to identify which solution may be the most suitable for different scenarios.

The progressive and massive penetration of renewable energy sources into electrical grids is introducing new critical issues in electrical systems around the world. Due to their non-programmability, combined with the fact that renewable energy plants are devoid of mechanical inertia, there are important repercussions on the stability of the electricity grids, in particular as regards the regulation of the frequency and voltage of the grids.

Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to present the State-of-the-Art relating to some technological solutions capable of supporting the power system stability in scenarios with high penetration of renewable sources.

In particular, the paper focuses on synchronous compensators, STATCOMs and supercapacitors. The performance and the technical features of these technologies are compared, in order to identify which solution may be the most suitable for different scenarios.
