The evolution of the Italian power system by 2030 to support more than 55% of renewables in electricity consumption

The article analyzes in detail the impacts for the electricity sector of the energy scenario developed in support of the PNIEC. The analysis was carried out using the medium-term electricity market simulator s-MTSIM developed by RSE.

On 31/12/2018 the proposal for the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan was sent to the European Commission. The Italian government document represents an important step in defining the action priorities for achieving the European targets that Italy intends to commit to with regard to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy and energy efficiency by 2030. The Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) also marks an important step for RSE, which in recent months has played a decisive role in the development of the energy scenarios that have supported a large part of the assessments underlying the strategy. Starting from the results of the energy scenario developed for the PNIEC (with the Times national energy model), RSE analyzed in detail the impacts for the electricity sector, paying particular attention to the critical issues in the safe operation of the system and the investments necessary to resolve them. The analysis was carried out using the medium-term electricity market simulator s-MTSIM developed by RSE.
