This summary report outlines the research activities conducted by RSE in 2020 within the framework of the 2019-2021 Three-Year Implementation Plan for the two Work Packages (WPs) of the project “Scenarios and Tools for Electric Mobility and its Integration and Interaction with the Power System.” In 2020, significant progress was made on various research activities, many of which are expected to be completed in 2021 to achieve the overall project goals.

Within WP1, “Scenarios and Tools for Electric Mobility,” the focus continued on developing a multimodal traffic model for interurban travel. Additionally, the development of a modeling system for air quality analysis progressed, with a particular focus on the mobility scenario resulting from the COVID-19 health emergency restrictions. The pandemic situation also prompted an investigation into the effects of widespread adoption of smart working on traffic and emissions. Finally, technical and economic evaluations were conducted on the potential for converting waste collection vehicles, public transport boats on lakes, and large stationary ships to electric power.

In the second WP, “Electric Mobility and its Integration and Interaction with the Power System,” the focus was on the flexibility that can be offered through the proper management of electric vehicles during charging. A new stochastic optimization model was developed for planning charging in the case study of providing grid services by a corporate fleet, taking into account various forms of uncertainty. To facilitate field experimentation, the electrification plan for the RSE corporate fleet was initiated, and electrical and construction work was completed to create an experimental charging area, in addition to the two bidirectional Vehicle-To-Grid (V2G) charging stations integrated and tested in the RSE “Test Facility” laboratory. Lastly, preliminary analyses were conducted on the impacts of electrifying local public transport on the distribution network, including some economic evaluations.

The project involved numerous activities supporting institutions (ministries, ARERA, Lombardy Region) and working groups (IEA, MotusE, e-Mob), as well as extensive opportunities for knowledge dissemination and exchange with other key sector stakeholders.
