Accelerated aging tests for anti-ice and anti-pollution coatings and advances in mitigating the formation of ice loads on conductors

The activity involved delving deeper into the topics relating to the behaviour of composite material core conductors in the presence of ice overloads and creeping, solutions for mitigating the formation of ice sleeves. With reference to the accelerated aging tests, an environmental aging cycle was identified that reproduced the relevant stresses in the laboratory, a test set-up was prepared and testing was carried out on a large number of samples in the presence of coatings for insulators and conductors.

The activity first involved delving deeper into the topics addressed in the previous years of the Three-year Plan (and relating to LAs1.03 and 1.14) with reference to the behaviour of ice overloads and creeping of composite material core conductors and solutions to mitigate the formation of ice sleeves. In this regard, wind vibration tests were carried out with an anti-rotation device installed on the 22.8 mm ACSR conductor, and an additional ACSR conductor (26.9 mm) was characterised to increase the case history of torsional stiffness and behaviour in the presence of anti-rotation devices.
With reference to the creep test, a new elongation detection system with carbon bars (with a thermal expansion coefficient close to zero) was designed, realised and characterised (through thermal tests).
With reference to accelerated aging tests, in order to verify the resistance of coatings for conductors and insulators, an environmental aging cycle was identified that reproduces the relevant stresses in the laboratory and a test set-up has was prepared that allows for it to be reproduced.
Therefore, the activity involved carrying out the cycle with reference to a large number of samples in the presence of coatings for insulators and conductors.
