Analysis, integration and representation of new quantities in AEOLIAN

This paper reports on the completion and optimisation activities of the new Atlante EOLico ItaliANo – AEOLIAN, regarding to the new WebGIS, where, in addition to the 30-year hourly wind speed series and summary maps of the mean annual wind speed and full load hours (MWh/MW), wind power density maps, wind direction information and the estimated shape factor k of the Weibull distribution over the period 2015-2019 for each calculation cell, both onshore and offshore, are now available.

Considering the importance of wind energy for the achievement of decarbonisation targets, RSE has completely renewed the Wind Atlas of Italy, whose first version dated back to the early 2000s, using a modern modelling approach.

The past research year saw the release of the new AEOLIAN WebGIS, through which users can access the available summary maps for both the onshore and offshore domains and the 30-year hourly wind speed series that make up the new wind database.

As a result of the additions made in this year of research, AEOLIAN now contains, in addition to wind speed (m/s) full load hours (MWh/Mw) maps at different altitudes a.g.l./a.s.l., wind direction information in the form of a wind rose and wind intensity/direction frequency table, wind power density, and the k shape factor parameter of the Weibull distribution calculated over the period 2015-2019. The tools integrated into the WebGIS allow the download of all data represented in AEOLIAN.

RSE also participates in a few international activities, including those related to IEA Task 49, whose objective is to accelerate the sustainable commercialisation of floating wind farms on an industrial scale through the definition of design standards. In this context, AEOLIAN data were used to characterise a hypothetical offshore wind farm site in the Mediterranean Sea from the point of view of meteocean conditions.
