Extension and update of pan-European zonal models for interconnection project assessments in 2030 scenarios

This Report describes the zonal model of the pan-European system developed for analysis up to 2030. This model was developed primarily for the technical-economic evaluation of selected projects for interconnecting the Italian transmission network with the European system, and of internal reinforcements for cross-border exchanges.

This Report describes the zonal model of the pan-European system developed for analysis up to 2030. This model was developed primarily for technical-economic analysis and evaluation of some of the benefits of selected projects for connecting the Italian transmission network with the European system and of internal reinforcements for cross-border exchanges.

The analysis of the electricity scenarios at 2030 available in Europe was based on the consideration of the forecast data published by ENTSO-E (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity). In particular, the zonal model of the pan-European system at 2030 was developed starting from the European scenario 2030 ST (Sustainable Transition) of the Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) 2018 of ENTSO-E with appropriate integrations and extensions.

The updated pan-European model has also been significantly expanded at the zonal level of detail and has been prepared for further extensions to extra-European systems.

It is important to underline that the construction of this pan-European zonal model at 2030 is a fundamental step for its subsequent use and implementation oriented towards multiple goals such as the evaluation of transmission network expansions both in terms of interconnections in the Italian and European context and in terms of corridors towards extra-European systems.
