Mathematical formulation of optimal bidding strategy for hydroelectric power plants: preliminary results

In this work, a two-level optimization model has been proposed to plan and operate a pumped storage hydro power plant. The proposed model allows to simulate both the long-term strategy of the water reservoir and the optimal bidding strategy on the Day-Ahead Market. The model proposed is tested considering a realistic case-study.

The activity described in this report, resulting from a collaboration with ARERA, is focused on studying the bidding strategies of hydroelectric plants in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM). A two-level mathematical model has been proposed to simulate the planning and management of the bidding strategy in the DAM of a generic hydroelectric power plant.

The first level aims at planning the water resource utilization strategy over a long period through a Monte Carlo approach and a linear programming model. The second level defines the bidding strategy in the DAM, in terms of offered prices and quantities, considering the future plant management and the associated uncertainties.

The model has been tested considering a pumped storage hydro power plant. The results shows that the proposed model allows to obtain a bidding strategy capable of exploiting peak price hours to sell energy and off-peak hours, characterized by lower prices, to absorb energy from the grid.
