Performance Analysis of the 5G Test-Bed for Real-World Use Cases in Energy Applications

The document presents the development and testing activities of SDN (Software Defined Network) solutions for 5G networks applied to the monitoring of electrical grids using PMU (Phasor Measurement Unit). The tests were conducted both in a simulation environment and in an experimental context that includes ICT architectures and real devices. Additionally, the use of mmWave 5G radio channels for communications associated with PMUs was analyzed in simulation, referencing a real-world application scenario.

The activity presented in this report concludes the three-year research project on 5G networks for applications in the energy sector. The solutions based on the SDN (Software Defined Network) approach of the 5G network, proposed and tested by FUB in a simulated environment, were applied and validated with RSE in a realistic context at the IoT lab, connected to the distributed generation test facility.

The reference scenario is the observability of the power system through PMUs (Phasor Measurement Units), which allow very accurate monitoring of the power system’s state. These devices, currently few in number and mainly installed on the transmission network, could, due to anticipated significant cost reductions, become widely used for monitoring distribution networks as well. In this context, the management of data traffic from PMU measurements to data collection units, such as PDCs (Phasor Data Concentrators), is crucial for the effective implementation of an efficient monitoring system.

The SDN solutions proposed by 5G networks are an effective and scalable solution for the optimal management of traffic generated by PMUs. In addition to the development and testing of SDN solutions, a simulated environment was also used to analyze an application scenario for using mmWave 5G radio channels for managing communications associated with PMUs, examining its scalability. The application scenario refers to a real geographical area and was defined in collaboration with RSE, which provided guidance on the potential locations for the PMUs.
