Project ‘Application of Information Technology, Internet of Things, Peer-to-peer, to the electricity system in order to improve security and resilience’ – 2019 Activities

The document summarises the path and results of System Research 2.3 project activities in 2019. The results include methods, tools and components for creating experimental demonstrators regarding the application of the most advanced information and communication technologies to the benefit of the electricity and energy system, including the aspects of security and resilience of ICT infrastructure to cyber attacks.

This three-year project aims at developing methods, tools and experimental demonstrators regarding the application of the most advanced information and communication technologies to the benefit of the electricity and energy system, including aspects of security and resilience of infrastructure to cyber attacks. In 2019, preliminary activities were carried out regarding emerging ICT architectures and the state of the art of technologies, with the aim of designing the IT test platforms and demonstrators envisaged by the project. The topic of the use of semantic data models for interoperability and system integration was developed, looking at their evolution towards an integrated energy system. Technologies for end users capable of promoting the active participation of even small users in the processes and markets of the electricity sector were considered.

In the field of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies , Low Power WAN networks and their application advantages for the monitoring of electricity infrastructure and related diagnostics were considered, laying the foundations for experimental evaluations in the field. 5G networks were studied and evaluated by simulating application scenarios. Regarding IoT, applicable technologies for the development of specific search engines for the characteristic information of this area were also evaluated. Among the most relevant topics, activities were carried out regarding Big Data management and processing technologies and the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques for the analysis of data available to network operators.

The issues related to the security of the ICT infrastructure serving the electricity system were addressed by working on the development of a test environment for cyber protection technologies, solutions for securing emerging Cloud/Fog and IoT architectures and methodologies for assessing the resilience of cyber-power systems. Particular attention was also paid to monitoring techniques and early recognition of anomalies in ICT infrastructure in order to promptly counter attacks and increase system resilience. The issue of infrastructure security certification was also addressed, focusing on 5G networks and SCADA system components.

Finally, collaborations with universities and interactions with other System Research projects on synergetic activities were started. As part of the support activities for institutional entities, meetings, interactions and specific activities were held for MiSE, ARERA and other national and international regulatory bodies.
