Summary of activities conducted in support of national institutions in the international context of Smart Grids and the energy system

This deliverable outlines the activities carried out by RSE in support of institutions and industries in the field of Smart Grids. Specifically, it describes the international coordination activities related to the Mission Innovation (MI) – IC1 on Smart Grids initiative, the IEA ISGAN Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP), and the EERA Joint Programme on Smart Grids. It also reports on activities undertaken as participants in the IEA CERT, EUWP, and TCP Wind bodies, as well as the efforts in preparing for the second phase of MI.

This deliverable outlines RSE’s activities in supporting institutions and industries in the field of research and innovation within the power system. At the request of MISE, RSE participates in and coordinates various international initiatives, specifically:

Coordinates, within MI, the Innovation Challenge 1 on Smart Grids (IC1), aimed at accelerating the development and implementation of solutions for decarbonizing the power system. To facilitate the dissemination of innovative solutions and international cooperation, RSE, as part of IC1, developed the SGIA platform, which enables the sharing of strategic documents related to the energy system and includes a powerful semantic search engine to enhance their accessibility and use.

Contributes to the development of the second phase of the Mission Innovation initiative, designed to catalyze public and private investments towards ambitious goals to accelerate the decarbonization of the energy system. Specifically, RSE collaborates with representatives from other countries to define a new Mission focused on the power system and the integration of non-programmable renewable energy sources.

Chairs and actively participates in ISGAN, a CEM initiative and one of the TCPs of the IEA, aimed at creating a strategic forum to promote the dissemination of information and solutions for the innovation of the power system, raising awareness at the governmental level.

Represents Italy and participates (along with ENEA) in the steering committee of the IEA Wind TCP and is a member of Task 11 “Base Technology Information Exchange.” The Wind TCP promotes cooperative research activities on key topics related to wind technology development and its dissemination, also serving as an international forum for discussion and sharing.

Coordinates the Joint Program on Smart Grids (JP SG) of EERA, aimed at harmonizing research topics across different centers at the European level, allowing participants to share information and technical-scientific results on leading-edge issues in Smart Grids.

Participates in the coordination and oversight body for IEA research activities (CERT) as Vice-Chair and in the working group on energy end-use technologies (EUWP), holding the Vice-Chairmanship for the integrated power system segment.

RSE’s cooperation in these contexts not only supports Italian institutions but also plays a crucial role given the current dynamic evolution of the power system. This cooperation fosters the exchange of information, ideas, and knowledge, promoting innovation and identifying major and promising research areas in the energy sector.
