Summary of activities to support institutions in the international arena on electricity system innovation – year 2022

This deliverable reports on the activities that RSE carries out in support of institutions (particularly the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security) in the area of electricity system research and innovation.

This report summarizes the work in progress in the following areas:

  • RSE supports the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) in its action as co-Lead (together with China and the UK) of the Green Powered Future Mission launched in 2021 as part of the global Mission Innovation initiative. With a coalition of 27 members (nations, private sector companies and international organizations), the mission aims to demonstrate that, by 2030, energy systems will be able to integrate up to 100% variable renewable energy.
  • It chairs and actively participates in the activities of ISGAN, an initiative of the CEM and TCP of the IEA, aimed at creating a strategic forum to foster the dissemination of information and solutions for electricity system innovation.
  • It participates and acts as vice-chair of the IEA TCP dedicated to high temperature superconductivity (IEA HTS).
  • It supports MASE and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) within the IEA 3DEN initiative dedicated to the digitization of electrical systems.
  • It coordinates EERA’s Smart Grids Joint Program aimed at harmonizing the research subjects and activities of different research centers at the European level.
  • It participates in the IEA Committee on Energy Research and Technology (CERT) as Vice Chair and in the Working Party on Energy End-Use Technologies (EUWP), in which it acts as Vice-Chairman of the Integrated Electricity System Coordination Group. (IESCG).
  • Representing Italy on behalf of MASE, it supervised the preparatory work of the Global Offshore Wind Alliance in view of the launch of the initiative.
  • It participated in the international working group of experts in charge of carrying out the in-depth analysis of the energy policy of the government of the Republic of Greece.
  • It collaborates with the Italian Association of Energy Economists on the analysis of critical issues for the
    energy transition.

Collaboration in international contexts is an important element of innovation in the electricity system as it allows for effective exchange of information, ideas and knowledge thus accelerating the development and adoption of innovative solutions. In addition, the timely gathering of results from projects developed by other countries helps best identify the leading and most promising lines of research.
