Summary of the international activities carried out in support of institutions in the field of innovation of the electricity system

This deliverable reports on the activities carried out at the national and international level by RSE in support of institutions in the field of Smart Grids: supporting MASE in the direction of the Green Powered Future Mission of Mission Innovation 2.0; continuing the coordination of other international initiatives such as the IEA’s ISGAN and HTS TCPs and EERA’s Joint Program on Smart Grids; and participating as the Italian representative in the IEA’s CERT bodies.

This deliverable reports the activities that RSE carries out in support of governmental institutions (in particular, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security) in the field of research and innovation of the electricity system. More in details, this text summarizes what has been done in the following areas:

  • RSE directs and supports MASE in its co-Lead action (together with China and the United Kingdom) of the Green Powered Future Mission launched in 2021 within the global Mission Innovation initiative. The Mission, with a 28-member coalition (nations, private sector companies and international organizations) aims to demonstrate that, by 2030, energy systems will be able to integrate up to 100% of variable renewable energies.
  • Chairs and actively participates in the activities of ISGAN, an initiative of the CEM and at the same time one of the Technical Coordination Programmes (TCP) of the International Energy Agency aimed at creating a strategic forum to encourage the dissemination of information and solutions for the innovation of the electricity system, also raising the attention at the government level.
  • Participates and expresses the chair of the IEA TCP dedicated to high-temperature superconductivity (HTS).
  • Participates as Vice-Chair in the coordination and control committee of research activities of the IEA (Committee on Energy Research and Technology – CERT).
  • Coordinates the EERA Smart Grids Joint Programme aimed at harmonizing the research topics and activities of the different research centers at European level.
  • Collaborates with the Italian Association of Energy Economists on the analysis of critical matters for the energy transition with particular attention to Power Electronics.

International collaboration emerges as a determining factor for innovation in the electricity system by fostering an effective exchange of information, ideas and knowledge. In particular, synergy between different entities fosters the exchange of results of projects developed by other countries and allows for the best assessment of which are the largest and most promising research strands. The development of cutting-edge solutions to meet the challenges posed by the energy transition is also encouraged.
