Sustainable maritime transport in current and future energy overall context

The document is focused on the possible adoption on maritime public transport of small islands of alternative fuels, with a focus on the impact on electricity distribution networks, considering a sample case and also the on-board charging of passengers’ electric vehicles.

From a technical point of view, the document deals with the possible adoption of alternative fuels in maritime mobility for public transport on small islands, with a focus on the impact on electricity distribution networks. The document analyses in detail a possible scenario for the management of vessels, now operating on diesel fuel, converted to mixed electric-alternative fuel on a route connecting an Italian mainland port and a small island.

 

Assessments have been made about the vessels’ refueling requirements. The results show a generally not favorable situation for switching to alternative fuels. The whole context is accompanied by a supplement concerning on-board charging of electric vehicles.
