A new method to analyze the soiling in multi-junction, III-V based CPV modules

This paper presents a new method for analyzing dirt accumulation on the surfaces of concentrator photovoltaic modules based on III-V multi-junction cells.

The side-by-side (SBS) method assesses the performance degradation of concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) modules due to dirt by monitoring the power or current ratio between a test module and a reference module that must always be kept clean. For monitoring soiling trends in CPV plants, the SBS method introduces cost issues as the reference module requires continuous cleaning, either manually or automatically. This contribution proposes a new data filtering method that allows the evaluation of photovoltaic performance degradation due to dirt accumulation on multi-junction CPV modules without the need for a reference module. The new method is based on measuring the electrical parameters of the CPV module along with direct irradiance data in the spectral bands of the top and middle sub-cells (e.g., InGaP and InGaAs) and subsequently applying an appropriate filtering procedure. To validate the new methodology, a ten-month test campaign was conducted, and the results obtained with the data filtering method were compared with those from the SBS method.
