MODENA – MODello ENergetico Abitazioni (Household Energy Model)

A tool for studying household energy consumption and the Italian residential sector.

DESCRIPTION
MODENA is a computational model whose input matrix consists of the building characteristics and socio-demographic variables contained in the ISTAT “Household Energy Consumption” dataset, which consists of data obtained from a survey of a sample of 20,000 Italian households. The dataset also includes information on household appliance technologies and daily energy consumption habits within homes. The application, written in the Python language, consists of several independent, editable blocks. Using survey data and guidance from current standards it calculates household consumption (electricity, natural gas, biomass LPG and diesel fuel), on a national or regional scale with hourly discretion, considering the use of household appliances, domestic hot water production, heating and cooling.

APPLICATIONS
MODENA is a software tool created to meet the need to provide an assessment of energy consumption for different household uses, quickly estimate the possible effects of different interventions on individual case studies, or identify future efficiency and retrofit scenarios on a national scale. In particular, MODENA is able to estimate the energy consumption of different types of dwellings in the Italian building stock on the basis of a broad socio-economic database, providing useful indications for studies on improving the energy efficiency of residential buildings.

USERS
The tool is designed to quickly provide guidance to those interested in analyzing household energy consumption in order to assess the effects of technological, market and regulatory changes that may affect housing patterns.
