projects - Power System Research - Three year plan (2019-2021)

Application of Information Technology, Internet of Things, Peer-to-peer, to the electrical system in order to improve security and resilience

The project develops methods, tools, demonstrators and experiments to evaluate the application potential of the latest information and communication technologies for the benefit of the electro-energy system.

The project includes techniques to improve the security and resilience of the IT and telecommunication architectures required for the management of the electrical system.

Architectures and technologies for the analysis of large amounts of data, including in real time, useful for the management of the system, the improvement of its resilience and the maintenance of the infrastructure are also considered.

These technologies make it possible to address the increasing complexity of system management and control due to the significant presence of non-programmable renewable energy sources.

Complexity is managed by exploiting the flexibility of all available energy resources and also by involving new actors, including end users.

Research aims to promote the interoperability and security of communication and processing systems used in electro-energy system processes in order to achieve a high degree of integration among grid management, control and protection systems.

Test environments for cybersecurity verification and a coordinated set of tools for monitoring and recognising abnormal conditions for the timely activation of law enforcement and recovery actions are implemented.

Tools for checking cyber-power system resilience are included to enable assessment of the impact of cyber attacks on electrical system processes and, ultimately, the quality of service to users.
