The country and the energy transition: the households’ perspective

The 8th volume of the Colloquia Series prepared by RSE in collaboration with BVA Doxa, is online and available for download.

What is the relationship between Italians and energy transition? RSE responds with the new volume of the Colloquia Series entitled ‘Il Paese e la transizione energetica: il punto di vista delle famiglie’ (the country and the energy transition: the households’ point of view) produced in collaboration with BVA Doxa.

The study investigates what is the real knowledge of the issues and goals of the energy transition in Italy, and tries to understand the willingness of individuals to get out of their comfort zone to embark on a path of radical change.

With the goal to move toward the almost complete abandonment of fossil fuels, the energy transition constitutes a real revolution that firmly links environmental aspects to the world of energy and the economy and, for this reason, calls for action and personal and collective responsibility.

The narrative has as its main thread and protagonist people, confronted with various aspects and areas related to the energy transition. The narrative includes the analysis of the main indicators that emerged from several surveys conducted in collaboration with BVA Doxa in 2021 and 2022, starting from an interview of a representative sample of more than 7,000 households as part of the Doxa House Panel – observatory on Italians and housing. The survey group consists of the main sociodemographic variables, towns of different size and the four geographical areas of the country.

This survey made it possible to focus on the strengths and what elements of appeal are driving interest in the energy transition in the residential sector and, at the same time, to identify the weaknesses that hinder adherence to it on an emotional and rational level, and which may therefore constitute critical issues and barriers to the transformation.

With this information, it is possible to promote and develop rewarding communication to increase the desirability and awareness of the transition.
