Energy scenarios and governance support

Provide the authorities governing the energy system with technical support based on quantitative models and analysis in order to respond appropriately and optimally to the country’s obligations of energy and climate planning and the definition of energy strategies for decarbonization.
Provide useful assessments for the investments needed for the plan for National Ecological Transition.

 

The project aims at developing scenarios for the evolution of the national energy system mainly with a view to decarbonization and pursuing the other goals of energy system governance, such as care for the environment, improvement of energy independence and security, and the economic development of the country. The project also foresees direct collaboration with the authorities responsible for the governance of the national energy system by providing scenario studies, modeling tools and technical expertise for energy planning in the three-year period, such as: the implementation of the REPowerEU package, the update of the Italian National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), the update of the Long Term Strategy, the ‘Aree idonee’ [eligible areas] Decree, the possible completion of the Hydrogen Strategy, and the active participation in the technical support working groups to the Interministerial Committee on Ecological Transition (CITE).

 

The project’s scenario study includes insights into the national electricity system of energy scenarios, assessment of the environmental impact of the plans themselves (environmental scenarios and LCA assessments), assessments of the circular economy (including regulatory aspects), and interactions with the economy (economic and macroeconomic impact).

 

The scenarios are developed using quantitative models and databases, so one of the objectives of the project is also to update and adapt them continuously to the needs of the analyses. In particular, the goal is to strengthen the capacity to develop scenarios also with the integrated analysis of the environmental impacts and the economic or macro-economic impacts.

In this website you can find datasets of four historical mixes (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022) and an electricity mix for 2030 and for 2040. The datasets are available in .csv format.
