Standardization in the field of applied superconductivity (Part 1)

CEI Magazine is published online by the Italian Electrotechnical Committee (CEI) on a monthly basis. In each issue a column is devoted to one of the currently active Technical Committees, and for the November/December issue CT90 ‘Superconductivity’ was selected. The text of the article is divided into two parts: the first deals with low critical temperature superconducting materials, and the second with MgB2 and high critical temperature superconducting materials. At the end of the article, a short interview with the Chairman and Secretary of the Technical Committee is reported.

Many projects took place over the years or are still in progress involving a wide range of devices based on the use of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) and Low Temperature Superconductors (LTS): Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCLs), cables, transformers, Superconducting Magnet Energy Storage (SMES), rotating electrical machines, particle accelerators, hadron therapy systems, MRI and NMR, superconducting devices for digital electronics and detectors, and SQUID magnetic sensors. Therefore, the need arose for standardization activities to regulate the industrial aspects of superconductivity; based on these premises, the Technical Committee (Comitato Tecnico, CT) 90 was created within the Italian Electrotechnical Committee (CEI).
