Activities for the development of standards for agrivoltaic plants, in the CEI and UNI committees

The topic of agrivoltaic systems is of great interest for agricultural and energy operators, since they allow the dual use of the land, without compromising the continuity of agricultural activities. The CEI and UNI have attempted to provide indications on the parameters that characterize agrivoltaic systems by publishing the first regulatory documents, to which RSE has provided an active contribution. However, some important issues that require further development still remain open.

The topic of agrivoltaic systems is of great interest for agricultural and energy operators, since these systems allow the dual use of the land, without compromising the continuity of the agricultural activities that are carried out under and/or between the support structures of the modules of the photovoltaic systems and allowing mutual benefit for agricultural and energy activities.

Given this broad interest, there is not yet a clear indication at a national and international level of the parameters that characterize agrivoltaic systems and above all of the methods for calculating these parameters.

Taking into account these new needs, the CEI (Italian Electrotechnical Committee) and the UNI (Italian Standardization Body) have published the first documents on the definitions and technical prescriptions on agrivoltaics, to which RSE has provided an active contribution with the activities carried out as part of LA 2.01 of the RdS integrated project 1.1; these documents follow other national standard documents in the European context, such as: 1) DIN SPEC 91434 – Agrivoltaic systems requirements for primary agriculture use” (16 April 2021) and 2) AFNOR “Label Projet Agrivoltaïque – Référentiel de labélisation des projets de Classe A sur culture”, Vers. 1.1 – December 2021.

However, some important issues still remain open which require further development, and which are requiring the contribution of research centers, regulatory bodies, as well as agricultural and photovoltaic operators.
