Distributed Generation with High Penetration of Renewable Energy Sources

Distributed Generation with High Penetration of Renewable Energy Sources

DISPOWER was intended to support the transition from present energy supply to a more decentralised and market oriented supply structure. The project partners analysed the power supply system and its components including information and communication technologies with regard to high shares of distributed generation.

The studies, simulations and hardware implementations considered key aspects such as grid control, power quality, safety, reliability of interconnected and island grids as well as socio-economic aspects, e.g. contract and tariff issues regarding energy trading and subordinate services.

DISPOWER developed new methodologies, components and tools for planning, operational control, training, forecast and trading for the reliable and cost effective integration of distributed generation and renewable energies. Laboratory facilities were setup for developing, testing and demonstrating new operational control strategies and DER components in an expected system environment of different low voltage and medium voltage distribution grids with high DER penetration levels. The DISPOWER project was a research and demonstration project supported by the European Community within the 5 Framework Program. DISPOWER was a 4-year project with an overall budget of about 17 M€.

The project was carried on by a consortium of 38 different partners coming from utilities, power industry, service companies, research centres and universities from 11 European countries. The Project coordinator was ISET (Institut fuer Solare Energieversorgungstechnik) and Fraunhofer ISE as vice-coordinator. Project highlights, public deliverables, conference presentations, articles and press releases were also published. A workshop was organised in CESI, where some partners showed few results of the several ones obtained: during the workshop the DISPOWER partners tested utilities, manufactures and control designers to check their reactions concerning the work done. A brochure with selected results of DISPOWER project was produced for the “First International Conference on the Integration of Renewable Energy Sources and Distributed Energy Resources” – 1st – 3rd December 2004 – Brussels.
