A Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell electrochemical model

Attention is focused on Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFCs), for whose fast electrochemical dynamics a first-principle model is built up.

The analysis is based on sub-reaction kinetics (the main process giving water and heat from hydrogen and oxygen is decomposed into different steps), mass conservation for both the neutral gaseous reactants and the molten electrolyte ions, and the Kirchhoff laws; therefore, both Partial Differential Equations and algebraic relations are present. First, the description is carried out from a microscopic point of view, taking into consideration the electrode pores on whose surfaces reactions take place and matter fluxes are generated; then, also in order to tune model parameters, an average model is worked out. As far as the behaviour of cell voltage versus current is concerned, in particular, the followed approach analyzes the phenomena which are responsible of its decrease with respect to open-circuit conditions.
