A Piezospectroscoic based optical system for Automatic Assessment of High Temperature coatings degradation

High Temperature coatings degradation Letizia De Maria*, Ada Del Corno*, Claudia Rinaldi* Fotonica 2009 – 11° Convegno Nazionale delle Tecnologie Fotoniche Pisa, 27-29 Maggio 2009 * ERSE SpA This work deals with a developed optical bench based on the Photoluminescence Piezospectroscopy for detecting residual stresses, which develop inside the thermally grown oxide (TGO). This oxide grows at high temperatures beneath the ceramic layer of high temperature coatings applied to gas turbine blades. Actually as a result of these high compressive stresses, enough strain energy can be stored in the TGO to subsequently drive failure of the coating system by delamination and spalling. In this work a description of the developed system together with tests performed on specimen and on a serviced section of component are reported. New automatic procedures of analysis based on statistical algorithms are presented to find a more direct correlation between the piezospectropic diagnostic parameter and the spent life of the coatings.
