A review of the photovoltaic module and panel fire tests

Sintesi di quanto previsto dalla normativa attuale e da iniziative in corso d’opera per la classificazione del comportamento all’incendio dei moduli FV quando da installare su edifici.

Nowadays the use of photovoltaic (PV) systems in buildings is not only related to the solar energy conversion into electrical one, but also with energetic efficiency and aesthetic features in building roofs or facades. Thanks to the environmental policies, a strong development of photovoltaic installations has been growing all over the world. Moreover, the use of PV systems in building is also responsible of the growth of fires involving photovoltaic systems.In order to assess and mitigate the fire risk due to a PV system installation in buildings, it is required to do a rating of PV module fire performance. The Italian National Fire Service in 2012 released a guideline focused on a PV module fire rating oriented to PV roofs.

Other fire rating criteria can be found in the north American standard “UL 1703 – Standard for Flat-Plate Photovoltaic Modules and Panels”. Some test configurations can be related also to the European technical specification (UNI/TS 1187) about roof fire resistance. In addition, working groups of CEN and CENELC are collaborating for developing a new criteria proposal for fire rating of PV modules when they are mounted on a building roof. This paper aims to describe the current fire rating criteria for PV modules.
