Pierangela Cristiani* From fundamentals to microbial power plants: Electrochemically Active Biofilms International State-of-the-art Workshop Dourdan, France, 19-21 Novembre 2008 PRESENTAZIONE POWER POINT * CESI RICERCA The electric current generated by bacteria is more than enough as signal for bio-sensors. Thanks to the developing of bio-sensors based on electrochemical probes and able to monitoring the biofilm growth on metal surfaces, the “bio-electricity” has been already exploited with success for the microbial corrosion risk assessment of industrial equipments. Many other potential application of electrochemical microbial bio-sensors has been already investigated, but most of them still should be to develop. The present paper raids ambitious “deams” induced by the imagination of new promising potential applications of electrical biofilm sensors, starting from the presentation and description of actual applications and some experimental ones now in progress. The bottleneck to overcome for enlarging the use of biofilm monitoring to control technological and natural processes in several environments and the kind of microorganism (or consortia) that the electrochemical bio- probes are able to detect are discussed.
