Development, design and installation of a new naturally polluted insulatortesting station

Lo scopo di questo articolo è descrivere lo sviluppo della stazione sperimentale di prova degli isolatori con inquinamento naturale denominata laboratorio LANPRIS (LAboratorio Naturale PRova Isolatori), installato da Terna in collaborazione con RSE S.p.A. – Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico, collocata presso la sottostazione da 150 kV situata a Portoscuso, in Sardegna.

The severity of environmental pollution of overhead lines and substations insulators can have a not negligible impact in the reliability of a power system. Moreover, local variability of pollution contamination and specific site weather conditions add uncertainty in the evaluation of the correct insulator dimensioning. With the aim to investigate the behaviour of insulators, the evaluation of their performance in naturally polluted outdoor conditions is becoming more important and popular among Transmission System Operators. Power utilities, especially those that suffer from intense pollution problems (typically marine and industrial) like in many Italian regions, have in some cases taken into account to build open air insulator testing stations, in order to gain further understanding on insulator performance installed in their Transmission Grid.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of the experimental setup of a new natural polluted insulator testing station called LANPRIS ((N) natural (LA) laboratory for (IS) insulator (PR) testing), installed by Terna in cooperation with R.S.E. S.p.A. – Research on Energy Systems, placed at the 150 kV substation sited in Portoscuso, Sardinia region. The electrical substation of Portoscuso is also the place of AMICO (Artificially Moistened Insulator for Cleaning Organization), installed several years ago both by RSE and Terna to register data of leakage current and to measure electrical conductance on probe insulators, exposed to the same environmental stresses of those that will be tested in the experimental station LANPRIS. A new version of the AMICO system (with increased performances and with the possibility of feeding the insulator-probe also in DC) has also been designed and installed close to the testing station.

Portoscuso station represents a very critical situation for insulation contamination, due to a very harsh environment: some hundred meters from the coast, nearby a steel mill and subjected to frequently high winds during the all year long. The description of the site selection, the electrical and mechanical configuration of a 150 kV tower station, the equipment and the testing setup will be described, with particular focus on the environmental constraints of the land and the need to build particular over ground foundations, according to the contaminated nature of the soils.

First results from the monitoring of leakage current values compared with meteorological parameters measured by the weather station will be also discussed, comparing data from different types of insulators installed on the overhead lines of the Italian Transmission Grid.
