Laboratory tests and computer aided simulation for the assessment of the sensitivity and the effectiveness of the method Claudio Valagussa*, Roberto Brambilla*, Andrea Colombo* ISH 2007-15th International Symposim on High Voltage Engineering Lubiana, 27-31 Agosto 2007 *CESI RICERCA SpA Diagnostic of composite insulators is generally performed by visual inspection and with the aid of cameras operating in infrared or ultraviolet spectrum. Since some years a new diagnostic method, applied with Live Line Maintenance techniques and based on electric field measurement distribution along the insulators is available. The analysis of the electric field distribution gives additional information on the condition of the insulator to be used in conjunction with the other diagnostic methods. In the present paper the results of the tests carried out in CESI RICERCA laboratories are shown, with the aim to assess basic information on the sensitivity and the effectiveness of the diagnostic method when applied to high voltage line configurations with composite insulators. A special emphasis is given to the possibility of detecting floating defects, that are the most difficult type to detect also with the other diagnostic methods. The experimental activity was supported by the setup of a 3D BEM model that permits the computation of electric field distribution in presence of composite insulators with or without defects. Such a model, validated by comparison with experimental data, has been used in order to deepen some aspects relevant to the capability of detection of small dimensions defects.
