Impact of ICT failures on distributed generation applications

The paper presents some power control system scenarios which are currently under study in the framework of a European Project whose acronym is CRUTIAL. The control system scenarios illustrate the existing and future interactions among the power and information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructures. Recent years a growing deployment of distributed generators in low voltage power grids is seen, and the amount of distributed generators is expected to increase even further in the near future. Low voltage distribution grids are however not designed to contain generators. Furthermore, these generators are not controllable by the Distribution System Operators and provide little or no ancillary services, such as frequency and voltage control. Therefore new control strategies have been designed based on relatively cheap ICT equipment and public communication networks such as the Internet. The focus of the paper will be on the impact of ICT failures in the operation of autonomous electricity grids in which dispersed generation resources are controlled by centralised and distributed schemes.
