Enhancements to improve Security of a National Electrical System Giuseppe Mauri*, Diana Moneta* Libro: Modeling, control, simulation, and diagnosis of complex industrial and Energy Systems- ANIPLA-book edited by ISA/O3NEIDA * CESI RICERCA Spa Need to control demand of electrical power has been felt, during the years, above all to avoid oversizing of electrical distribution networks and generation capabilities. The daily load curve depends on productive processes, but also on habits that may be modified by reasonable efforts. The progressive drop of the required threshold to become “eligible” users is going to widen interest in the Electricity Market spreading it over all LV customers even to households. The introduction and diffusion of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) has occurred with the hypothesis that, beside e-meter reading, some valuable services would be made available. Demand Response (DR) is one of these services. Actually two AMI’s functions are already suitable for DR: i.e. multi hourly tariff rates and the reduction of the maximum power available to each user. Additionally some AMIs already foresee the possibility to use e-meters as gateway for exchanging information with devices beyond e-meters, some of these systems may also support Direct Load Control (DLC) and communication with Local Energy Manager i.e. at customer premise. These AMI systems are suitable to support emergency plans for the security of power system primarily avoiding rotational blackouts. At CESI RICERCA studies and experiments, concerning possible technological innovations in the automation of the demand response, have been performed and their results are presented in this paper.
