Laboratory Tests for the Verification of the Screening Performance of Protective Conductive Clothing used in Live Line Work

This paper presents the test laboratory activity performed to assess the effectiveness of Live Line Maintenance conductive clothing developed in Italy and to investigate the feasibility of High Voltage shielding tests in UHV range. Specific tests were done in order to verify the influence of high voltage leads on shielding efficiency test results and to verify the behaviour of additional face screens. The results of the investigation will be a support for the review of the international standard.

Protective conductive clothing is commonly used in Bare Hands Live Line Work, in order to guarantee, at the maximum system operating voltage, safe operations of the qualified personnel involved. Clothing fabrics must have specific mechanical and electrical characteristics, in order to guarantee electric field shielding, current capability without local heating and resistance to abrasion. The manufactured clothing shall maintain the characteristics of the fabrics and must be comfortably worn by linemen. In the past decade conductive clothing was developed in Italy suitable to operate, according to the product international standard, at a system voltage up to 800 kV. At present a review of the product standard is in progress to give requirements for the use of clothing at higher voltage, up to 1000 kV.
