Lessons Learnt from the BEST PATHS Project for the Integration of Offshore Wind Power Plants using Multi-Terminal HVDC Grids

La memoria presenta i principali risultati della Demo 1 del progetto EU FP7 BEST PATHS finalizzata ad approfondire i futuri sistemi di trasmissione multi-terminali HVDC (MTDC) per l’integrazione su vasta scala di generazione eolica offshore. La Demo ha prodotto fra l’altro un toolbox open access di simulazione e un dimostratore sperimentale in tempo reale.

A thorough understanding and the effective analysis of future offshore transmission systems for the large-scale integration of renewables require the accurate modelling, simulation and validation of all components.

Demo 1 partners within the EU FP7 project BEST PATHS have contributed to this effort by defining likely topologies to be adopted for the transmission of offshore wind energy, proposing key performance indicators to assess the operation of prospective offshore grids, publishing an open access simulation toolbox for the grid connection of offshore wind farms (OWFs) using multi-terminal DC (MTDC) grids, building a real-time experimental demonstrator, and using the demonstrator to validate simulation-based work. Besides presenting the main project outputs, a summary of the lessons learnt by Demo 1 partners is included in this paper.

The main aim of the work is to help de-risking the use of MTDC grids for the connection of OWFs and, consequently, to provide stakeholders with tools to generate knowledge for developing, constructing and connecting MTDC grids.
