Long term modelling evaluation of secondary pollutant over italy and analysis of the main emission sources

Italy suffers high concentrations of ozone during summer and particulate matter in winter, whose occurrences could be related to relevant regional scale interactions with climate change. In order to quantitatively depict the main air quality dynamics, mathematical models can be successfully implemented. An integrated modelling system, made up of the 3D meteorological model RAMS and the chemical transport model CAMx, has been developed and applied to reconstruct both temporal and spatial features of O3, NO2 and PM10 concentrations for the year 2004 over the Italian region. The capability of the modelling system has been assessed evaluating several statistical indexes and performance indicators. Moreover PSAT algorithm, implemented in CAMx, allows to evaluate the contribution to PM10 concentrations of main emission sectors, such as energy production, transport and domestic heating. Sources apportionment analysis have been carried out over the whole domain and also focusing on some relevant receptors such as the urban area of Milan and Rome.
