Manganese cycle in the meromictic lake Idro

The peculiarity of the sub-alpine Lake Idro (North Italy) approached with the present work is the presence of a cloudy white layer, detected at 40-60 m of depth by scuba divers and never reported in literature. The hydrographic basin is mostly composed of dolomite, the typical rock of the Alps.

The general chemical composition is Mg(Ca)CO3, but it could include several metal impurities, including manganese. During the spring and summer 2013, some monitoring campaigns were conducted to ascertain the profile of some crucial physic-chemical parameters of the lacustrine water at different depths, to detect and to estimate the profile of the chemocline along the full depth of the lake and its variations in time. Chemical analyses of the water (particulates and dissolved components) were focalized to ascertain the nature of the “withe cloud” at 40-60 m.

The sigmoid profiles achieved, compared with those found in the literature, and the significant influence of the manganese in the chemist at the different depth-layers of the water is discussed.
