Note: Photoluminescence measurement system for multi-junction solar cells

Nuovo strumento per la misura spettrale del segnale di fotoluminescenza è in grado di produrre livelli di illuminazione molto elevati, superiori a 10.000 soli, come quelli a cui sono sottoposte celle solari multi-giunzione per alta concentrazione. Lo strumento opera nell’intervallo spettrale 475÷1650nm. Lo strumento è compatto a basso costo ed è estremamente flessibile.

We describe and characterize a new photoluminescence spectroscopy system capable of reproducing very high illumination levels like those at which multi-junction solar cells are subjected when mounted in HCPV (High Concentration PhotoVoltaic) systems. The instrument operates at room temperature over two wide spectral ranges 475nm÷1100nm and 950nm÷1650nm.

Power densities exceeding 10000 suns can be obtained with a simple, low cost and compact instrument that offers reduced complexity as well as excellent spectral resolution, good spatial resolution on the sample surface and high flexibility. The system presently employs three low cost laser sources operating at 450nm, 520nm and 785nm, that can work simultaneously in order to study possible mutual interaction between the different junctions in multi-junction solar cells or wafers. One of the scientific motivations of this activity was to study photoluminescence coupling phenomena in multi-junction solar cells and wafers under high solar concentration levels.

The instrument provides a very high sensitivity with excellent signal to noise ratio performances also in materials where the photoluminescence efficiency is quite poor. The design, construction and the unique features of this system are presented. Performance and preliminary tests of the prototype are discussed together with possible improvements.
