Open access simulation toolbox for the grid connection of offshorewind farms using multi-terminal HVDC networks

Questo lavoro, svolto in collaborazione con i partner del progetto BEST PATHS nell’ambito del programma EU FP7, è incentrato sull’integrazione dei sistemi eolici offshore utilizzando la tecnologia di trasmissione in corrente continua multi-terminale. Le simulazioni dinamiche sono state condotte con un open access toolbox integrato in MATLAB/Simulink. Gli schemi di impianto (sistema eolico + HVDC) e relativi controlli mostrano una buona rispondenza agli indici di prestazione introdotti.

This work, carried out by DEMO 1 partners within the EU FP7 project BEST PATHS, is focused on integration of offshore wind farms (OWFs) using multiterminal high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) grids. In particular, models and control algorithms implemented within a toolbox for MATLAB/Simulink are illustrated.The toolbox has been made available as open access in the BEST PATHS project.The toolbox has been tested simulating three topologies of grid-connected OWFs using HVDC grids: point-to-point HVDC link, three-terminal MTDC grid and six-terminal MTDC grid with offshore DC links.

Three dynamic simulation tests have been carried out for the OWFs + HVDC grids: Test 1 concerns the onshore converter control when references for DC voltage and reactive power are changed; Test 2 evaluates the onshore AC fault ride-through capability of the HVDC systems; Test 3 evaluates the converter control for offshore AC voltage regulation and the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the AC voltage.A set of proposed KPIs to assess system performance is illustrated.The simulated configurations exhibit good performance and the tested KPIs are fully met.
