Pd membranes supported on porous stainless steel with an inter-metallic AL2O3 diffusion barrier

The synthesis of thin, defect free, stable and with sufficient lifetime Pd-based membranes is still a challenging task. When Pd-based layers are grown directly on porous stainless steel (PSS) supports, the membrane lifetime and the H 2 permeability are negatively affected by the migration of elements from the support to the Pd- based layer, and the phenomena is known as intermetallic diffusion.

In this work the deposition of intermetallic barrier layers made of alumina using the sol gel technique is studied. The effects of the stainless support modifications, for example a reduction of the roughness, in order to improve their characteristics before the alumina deposition have been investigated. The composition of the Al based sol has been studied in order to find the best conditions for uniform alumina coatings. Pd dense layers were growth on the intermetallic alumina barrier and their performance in terms of gas permeation have been evaluated.
