Performance Evaluation of Different Photovoltaic Technologies in Diverse Geographical Locations

With the increasing number of photovoltaic (PV) installations on a worldwide scale, an outdoor performance analysis of various types of modules in specific geographical locations, under various climatic conditions is needed. From this action both the scientific community and the different actors in the PV environment, such as developers, producers, installers, financing institutions, as well as decision-makers and customers will benefit. For this reason, diverse locations and geographical environment along the Italian territory are taken into consideration, from the Alps to the sea-side area in Sicily. The considerations are done for different PV module types, covering the majority of market-available technologies. The PV modules are evaluated in relation to ambient conditions, installation characteristics, module-specific behavior and state. The meteorological sensors installed on the fields allow the measurement of the following components of the solar radiation: global horizontal, in-plane global, direct and diffuse horizontal. In addition, wind speed and direction, as well as the ambient temperature, are considered. The power production in Milan and Catania is monitored with a special system to evaluate the current and voltage specific values on the DC and AC side of the inverter, allowing also a comparison with the inverter monitoring system, which is used in Bolzano. Results are expressed by performance indicators and validated by an uncertainty estimation. As instrumentation and environmental conditions are not the same, uncertainties for the locations might be different. Conclusions will be based on the monitoring results registered during three different months, highlighting the importance of the monitoring system and its components to obtain reliable results.
