Plug-in electric vehicles and their impact on the electrical network: the Italian R&D experience

This paper presents the main results of an Italian national research project started in 2009 with the aim of investigating all system aspects related to the potential mass roll-out of plug-in electric vehicles, and particularly their technical, environmental and economic impacts. An electric mobility scenario focused on private cars has been defined in a time interval between 2010 and 2030. The evolution of the power system needed to meet the consequent electric demand increase has been analyzed by means of a specific simulator of the national power system. Preliminary evaluations of the environmental impact of electric mobility have also been carried out by using a standard European methodology to calculate the air pollutants emitted. The EVs/PHEVs impact on the distribution network has been modelled by considering European average representative circuit configurations and load profiles, thus evidencing a potential problem of evening peak increase, and therefore of lines overload, if vehicle charging is not carried out using smart grids technologies. Experimental tests on different kinds of batteries have confirmed the Lithium-ion technology potential for EVs propulsion, although aging time effects must still be investigated.
