Preparation and Characterization of Palladium Alloy Membranes for Catalytic Membrane Reactors

alladium alloy membranes are widely studied for hydrogen separation from synthesis gas in membrane reactors. Due to the considerable cost of palladium, efforts have been made to obtain low thickness metal top layers on cheaper support materials such as ceramics by various techniques, including electroless plating.

The more the thicknessn of Pd layer is lowered, the more obtaining defect-free deposits with adequate adhesion and stability becomes a critical issue. Moreover, these characteristics are related to several variable, including type and structure of support material, deposition procedure and thermal treatment of the deposit, which are not yet fully understood. This presentation deals with the preparation and characterization of Pd and Pd-Ag composite membranes formed by a thin metal layer deposited on a commercial alumina porous tube by electroless plating
