PV market and incentives in Italy

With attractive incentive scheme, Italy is at present the world’s second largest PV market. The ongoing phase of the Italian “Conto energia” Programme is in fact resulting in a very large participation and, now, in a sharply increase of PV installations. Moreover, its recent new phase (the fourth one of Programme) adopted with Ministerial Decree of 5 May 2011 has defined the new incentive tariffs for photovoltaic generation in the period 2011- 2016. Despite the tariff decrease, the pay back time corresponding to the new tariffs and the system prices has continued to attract many solar investors. In this framework, up to now the power installed during 2011 sums to about 6 GW and is reasonably expected to grow up to 7,5 by the end of this year. Comparing the total power installed during 2010 (2,3 GW), it is expected a growth rate around 320 % as respect to the previous year. From the technical point of view, the main barrier to the increase of PV installations is represented by the electric grid that become to be not adequate in some regions of south Italy, where the installed power of wind turbines and photovoltaic power stations has reached almost the same order of magnitude of peak load. As a consequence, the growth of the Italian photovoltaic market must be accompanied by an adequate plan for MV and HV grid development and management.
