Real field testing results of the innovative Medium Voltage control systemdeveloped in the Italian Demonstrator of GRID4EU

L’articolo descrive i risultati in campo reale del sistema di controllo avanzato delle reti di distribuzione, sviluppato nel dimostratore italiano del progetto Grid4EU.

In the framework of the Italian demonstrator of GRID4EU project (www.grid4eu.eu), an advanced power flow and voltage control system has been designed, developed and tested in the field. The large scale demonstration project, co-funded by the European Commission, has been implemented by Enel Distribuzione in partnership with Cisco, RSE, Selta and Siemens. One of the main barriers for further increasing distributed generation is the Hosting Capacity (HC) of the electricity grid.

Since the existing grid was designed for mono-directional power flows, connecting a large number of Distributed Generators (DG) can cause problems such as unacceptable level of power quality, generation-load imbalances, protection problems and congestions in the grid. In order to avoid the aforementioned problems and to maintain the necessary level of availability and power quality, the management of distribution grids in the presence of variable generation requires the development of advanced grid monitoring and control capabilities.

As a follow up to the paper C6-210 “Active MV distribution networks: functional validation of the advanced voltage controller in the GRID4EU Italian demonstrator” presented during the CIGRE Session 2014, this paper focuses on the real field tests results of the entire system that was deployed In particular, beyond presenting the devices installed, the paper addresses the following aspects:

• Voltage regulation – open and closed loop results
• Statistical data analysis regarding the daily usage of the HV/MV transformer’s On Load Tap
• Changer (OLTC) due to the innovative voltage regulation in place
• Real field results and lessons learnt from the usage of an Electric Energy Storage System(EESS)
• Black-start” experience using the EESS
