SEE HYDROPOWER Project, targeted to improve water resource management for a growing renewable energy production

The SEE HYDROPOWER project, financed by the South-East Europe Transnational Cooperation Programme (EU), started on June 2009 and finishing on October 2012, aims to promote sustainable exploitation of water for an increasing hydropower production in SEE countries, preserving river environmental quality and reducing flood risk (www.seehydropower.eu). The present paper focus the attention on the overall strategy of the project, the description of the main software and methodologies developed in the first phase of the project and their implementation in five pilot case studies: Piave basin located in Italy, Mur basin in Austria, Ialomita and Prut rivers in Romania, Drava in Slovenia and Strymonas in Greece. The selected pilot areas present a wide range of environment, water availability and hydropower exploitation permitting to test strategies selected in the SEE HYDROPOWER project.
